The 63rd Southern Regional Press Institute got underway on Thursday, February 20 with many workshops to educate and help college and high school students with future careers.
The Press Institute began in 1951 from the First annual Press Workshop held on May 2-4, 1951 for members of the Savannah State College Press Club under the guidance of Miss Luetta Colvin.
Current SRPI coordinator, Novella Cross Holmes honors individuals associated with the Institute who have given tirelessly to ensure its success. Among the recipients this year is Mr. Marius Davis, an alumnus of Savannah State University, and a graduate of the mass communications program.
“This Press Institute is near and dear to my heart and it has been since I started working with it as a sophomore going into my junior year,” Davis said. When informed he would be receiving the award, Davis said was elated to discover he was being acknowledged for what he has a passion for.
On Friday, February 21, Davis and Kimberly Starks, another Mass Communications alum were awarded the Service to the Institute Award. For ten years, Mr. Davis has volunteered all his efforts of making sure the Institute continues to educate and help students each year.
“I’m very pleased with the Institute itself and what it is to our university and community. I am also pleased with the caliber of professionals that come each year,” he said.
