Professionals in the music industry came to Savannah State University today to encourage students in the Mass Communications Department on their future in the music business. The director of the 63rd Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI) seminar for So You Wanna be in the Music Biz? Hear it From the Pros. Ms. Tata Adams Fox, Senior Vice president of Warner/ADA Marketing started off the event. Traci Adams, Vice-President of Urban Promotions, and Michael Trammel, CEO of Melart Entertainment, accompanied Ms. Fox as her consultants.
The seminar was to give advice to the Mass Communication majors at Savannah State University on how to be successful in the business by applying the four Ps. These four Ps consist of passion, preparation, pursue, and prosperity. Passion was used to explain the love for what one enjoys doing. Preparation involved getting research and becoming knowledgeable about your major. As Fox said, “You build it, they will come.” Pursue is about being ready. Timing is everything. Lastly prosperity is when the money comes.
The SRPI has been held every year at SSU for the past 63 years helping students who are passionate about their careers. Due to the fact SSU is one of the two accredited schools in mass communication in Georgia the students are privilege to have this opportunity. Taylor Pecot, junior and mass communication major said, “I feel like it’s an overall great opportunity that every mass communication student should take advantage of.”
Although the music industry can be a competitive process it is also a learning experience. If you have a goal go for it and let no one stand in your way. Always be yourself and own your backyard. “People will come to you, your goal is to build your own fan base, branch out because right now you work for yourself…” Trammel said.
